  • Climate

    The climate of San Diego is a Mediterranean climate featuring warm, sunny, and dry summers, and cooler, wetter winters.

     

    Late summer and early autumn are the hottest times of the year with temperatures occasionally reach into the 90's or higher.  On average, 344 days a year are warmer than 60 °F.

     

    Between May and August, San Diego experiences marine layer clouds which cause cooler temperatures, cloudy weather and fog in the morning.

    San Diego has on average 146 sunny days a year. The average annual precipitation is less than 12 inches 

  • Geography

    San Diego is located along the Pacific Ocean and San Diego Bay about 17 miles north of Mexico.  The city which is comprised of miles of ocean and bay shoreline is built on mesas that lie between canyons and forested hills that naturally break up the sprawl of the city.  The San Diego River runs through the middle of San Diego creating a river valley which further divides the city.  The Laguna Mountains stand to the east. San Diego Bay is one of the finest natural harbors in the nation.

    • Exploring the aircraft exhibits aboard the USS Midway - the longest serving aircraft carrier (1945-1992).
    • Seeing San Diego de Alcalá, the first of the twenty-one California Missions. It marks the birthplace of Christianity on the West Coast.
    • Hearing, smelling, and seeing some of the more than 2,600 animals representing more than 300 species at the 1,800-acre Safari Park.

    EAT

    A California Burrito which originated in San Diego in the 1980's.  The California Burrito normally consists of chunks of carne asada meat, french fries, cheese, and either cilantro, pico de gallo, sour cream, onion, or guacamole (or some combination of the five).

    DRINK

    Stay hydrated.  Drink water!

  • Surprises:

    • The Giant Dipper, a wooden roller coaster at Belmont Park in Mission Beach, is the only roller coaster in the United States to be on the National Register of Historic Places.
    • San Diego's Balboa Park is actually bigger than Central Park in New York City - almost twice as big.
    • The Mission San Diego de Alcala has six bells.  The very first bell was hung on a tree and it is still there today.
    • Cabrillo National Monument is a memorial to Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo - the "Columbus of California". He was in search of the island of California. When he landed at San Diego Bay on September 28, 1542, he became the first ever European to set foot on the western coast of the United States. He took possession of the entire coast for the King of Spain.
